Beltsville, MD October 2011 – There is good news for parents of school age children. The first few weeks of school are typically an opportunity to trade not only summer stories but also germs and viruses. But incorporating a probiotic supplement may be the key to strengthening the body’s natural defenses and warding off illness. A recent study published study in the British Journal of Nutrition reaffirmed the link between probiotics and a strengthened immune system. The probiotic strains used in the study were from Chr. Hansen, the same supplier used by Vidazorb® in their line of high-quality chewable non-refrigerated probiotics.
Children are heading back to school, and the number of germs they are exposed to increases significantly. According to WebMD, the common cold alone results in American kids taking 22 million sick days per year . Regular use of a probiotic, such as BellyBoost™ containing Chr. Hansen’s BB-12® and TH-4™ probiotic strains may help boost immunity, allowing the body to better resist the problems caused by various viruses and bacteria and allowing children to attend more class.
“My kids liked Vidazorb® and used it daily,” said Lisa Moore, mother and founder of the Frugal Family Fun Blog. She added, “I have noticed they haven’t been sick and (I don’t know if this is related) have been having better regularity of their digestion, if you catch what I’m trying to say. They say they like the taste and take it regularly. There is no fuss or fight and they have no idea that they are getting healthier by doing it.”
A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study, was conducted by researchers at Luigi Sacco Hospital, Milan, where 211 healthy adults were divided into two probiotic groups (receiving either the BB-12® or L. casei 431® strains) and two control groups receiving placebos. Plasma and saliva samples revealed that the probiotic group participants experienced a significant increase in flu antibodies (twice the baseline) compared with the control groups.
In the BB-12® group 66% of participants had a substantial increase in the antibody IgG3, compared with 4% of the placebo group. Similarly, 46% of the L. casei 431® group experienced a significant increase compared to just 2 percent of the placebo group.
Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when consumed in adequate amounts, provide a health benefit to the host. Everyone naturally has hundreds of trillions of microorganisms in his or her intestines and probiotics, affectionately known as “good bugs,” help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria and enhance the immune system by allowing the absorption of anti-oxidants from food, boosting the production of antibodies and supporting a cleaner liver and bloodstream.
Chr. Hansen’s BB-12® is used in four of the five products in the Vidazorb® line, including specially formulated children’s product BellyBoost™. In addition to immune strengthening BB-12®, the products also offer consumers other benefits. Vidazorb®’s +OPC and Super C, for instance, were the first probiotic supplements in the world containing Masquelier’s® Original OPC – a rich antioxidant source.
Each Vidazorb® supplement is manufactured to the highest quality standards with the full spectrum of bellies in mind. Vidazorb® probiotics are non-refrigerated, calorie-, gluten- and lactose-free in great tasting chewable tablet form.
